Recommended Uses of Salsa Grooves
When we are able to recognize the different rhythms played in a song, there is no need to count 1,2,3...5,6,7. Instead, we can relax and allow ourselves to be guided by the music. This greatly improves our timing, makes our dancing more fluid and spontaneous, and allows us to enjoy every song even more!

Salsa Grooves is the perfect tool to help you accomplish this. Simply follow these steps:

  • Listen to one rhythm at a time and master it!
    • Open Salsa Grooves, go to the "Learn" menu and select the rhythm of your choice.

Select a session relating to the rhythm you would like to fine-tune your ears to!

  •
    • Read about it, play it at different tempos and vocalize it.
  •
    • Pay special attention to the beats accentuated by the rhythm you selected. You can visualize those beats on the Salsa Grooves screen. This will ensure you not only know how it sounds but also its structure

  • Listen to the rhythm you are mastering while other rhythms are being played. The challenge is to be able to recognize the rhythm of your choice when played in conjunction with other rhythms!
    • Open the "Combined Rhythms" session in Salsa Grooves by selecting it in the "Practice" menu. This will display a list of most rhythms together

  •
    • Start by turning the volume up for the rhythm you are fine tuning your ear to, and turn the volume slightly down for all other rhythms. Once you are able to recognize your selected rhythm, continue with the next step

Adjust the volume of every rhythm to train your ears to distinguish the one of your choice
Adjust the volume of every rhythm to train your ears to distinguish the one of your choice

  •
    • Turn the volume of all rhythms to the max, including your selected rhythm. Try to recognize the rhythm you are working on. Once you are able to do it, move on to the next step
  •
    • Gradually keep turning the volume down for the rhythm you are fine tuning your ear to. If you are able to detect it when all other rhythms are louder, you will have successfully fine-tuned your ear to that rhythm. This is what you will encounter in a real Salsa song, some instruments are very loud while some others are barely audible. A trained ear is able to detect every rhythm!

  • Play a real Salsa Song and try distinguishing the rhythm you've been working on. This should be fairly easy if you've followed all previous steps. Keep in mind that not all rhythms are played throughout the song. If you can't hear the rhythm you are looking for, it might be that it is actually not being played at that particular time.

Remember to be patient with yourself. As usual, the more you practice, the easier it will become. Practice is king!!
