Before salsa became Catie Sherry’s dance of choice, her passion was ballet as she took lessons from the age of five until high school. She performed in the Nutcracker Suite multiple times in her hometown of Spokane,WA and her dream had always been to become a professional ballerina if only she had had the feet for it (she says that flat feet don’t work too well in ballet). However, she knew that she would have to dance for the rest of her life just because she loved it so much, even if it wasn’t ballet. After moving to Los Angeles to attend USC, she continued to take a few jazz dance classes because she couldn’t bring herself to stop dancing completely. Upon graduation with a degree in electrical engineering, she moved to Austin to work at IBM as a hardware verification engineer. Luckily a co-worker convinced her to start taking salsa classes at GoDance in June 2006 and she hasn’t stopped since. Having never danced salsa before, she started with the basics for a year and has just recently joined the Jazzy Dance Co. Performance Team. Carlos and Azucena have been instrumental in her progress as a salsa dancer and she cannot imagine dancing without their encouragement and instruction. She joined Jazzy so that she could continue to improve and dance as much as she possibly can. Thankfully she has found a form of dance that she can see herself doing for the rest of her life. One of her favorite quotes comes from a song by Lee Ann Womack: "When you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance." When she isn’t out social dancing or practicing with the team, she enjoys working out at the gym and hanging out with friends. She is also training for her first sprint triathlon, which she hopes to participate in in June.
