Carlos and I were very proud to represent Austin in the Acapulco/Mexico salsa salsa in Mexico soar to incredible heights. Several of the Mexican dance teams (from Oaxaca, Merida, Cuernavaca, and Monterrey) were really good; of the level one would expect in a salsa congress anywhere in the U.S. The best part of the congress was the beach! The entire congress took place in the Crown Plaza right by the beach and the hotel pools, and next to many delicious eateries that were open 24 hrs. The performances as well as the social dancing took place by the beach! What could be better than that?? The organizers built a stage and dance floors on the beach only for this event and for all the salsa maniacs that came from Canada, Tokyo, UK, Puerto Rico, US, and many parts of Mexico. Obviously a very large portion of the attendees were from Mexico so Spanish was the de-facto language. Even Shaka Brown gave his workshop in Spanish, as well as Griselle Ponce, Jayson Molina, and Milton Cobo. Albert Torres was the MC and main presenter and he also conducted the entire event in Spanish. This was the first international congress were Carlos and I were both instructors and performers, which to be quite honest, was a HUGE honor for us and we thank Victor and Gaby tremendously for inviting us to present our salsa rhythms workshop and our product, Salsa Grooves , to the many congress attendees. This was also the first time we taught 100% in Spanish. It was a delight! On a personal note, our workshop was a huge success and we completely sold out all the CDs of Salsa Grooves we had brought with us. We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw the room jam packed with eager students who had little clue who we were (until the end of the workshop, that is). All in all, the Acapulco congress was a very nice break from the regular US salsa congress were you spend your entire day inside the hotel taking workshops from dawn till dusk, and then social dancing at night. In Acapulco, we had the chance to be outdoors most of the time, wear flip flops and shorts, get up late (workshops started at noon), and dance until 7am at the local salsa bar "Parisien". Salsa Paradise! Congratulations to Victor and Gaby on a job well done. By the way, they have already reserved the entire Crown Plaza hotel for the 2006 Acapulco Salsa congress!! See you on the dance floor ! Azucena Jazzy Dance Co. |
